This firm was founded in 1971 by Doug Matthews and George Schmidt (recently deceased). Doug Matthews is one of the leading plaintiff's personal injury trial attorneys in the country. He has some of the highest verdicts and settlements in personal injury cases, particularly in products liability and railroad cases. He has successfully handled major cases against insurance companies and corporations. After graduating from the University of Texas School of Law and serving as a law clerk for the Texas Supreme Court, Doug Matthews served as a Captain in the United States Air Force as a JAG attorney.
Doug Matthews has served as an officer of several professional groups. He is a past President of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, a Governor of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, a past President of the Houston Trial Lawyers Association and a former chairman of a State Bar Grievance Committee. Both The Matthews Law Firm and Doug Matthews have an "AV" rating in Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest rating given for both legal ability and professional reputation. He has been Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1979. Doug Matthews is admitted to practice in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
