Asbestos is a very dangerous product. Individuals exposed to asbestos for extended periods of time may develop a variety of diseases. However, the most common diseases attributable to exposure to asbestos and/or asbestos related products include asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer, colon cancer, cancer of the larynx, cancer of the esophagus, and/or cancer of the stomach. For a more detailed explanation and description of these asbestos-related diseases, please visit the American Cancer Society website.
The major health problem caused by asbestos exposure, aside from the various forms of cancer listed above, is asbestosis. Asbestosis is a scarring disease which affects the lungs and which develops when a person breathes high levels of asbestos over time. According to the American Cancer Society, the principle symptoms of asbestosis include shortness of breath and a persistent cough. It is commonly found among asbestos workers. Medical reports further indicate that asbestos can also result in scar-like tissue in the membranes around the lungs called pleural thickening, skin lesions like warts, and immunological defects.
The American Cancer Society reports that approximately one in seven people who suffer from asbestosis, a lung disease caused by prolonged high exposure, eventually develop lung cancer. The higher the exposure to asbestos, the higher the risk of lung cancer.
MESOTHELIOMA
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the thin membranes lining the abdomen and chest. Mesothelioma is closely linked with asbestos; most cases of mesothelioma result from asbestos exposure. The risk of developing mesothelioma increases with the amount of asbestos exposure, but cases of mesothelioma have occurred even after low levels of asbestos exposure.
