DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. recently announced the recall of its ASR Hip Replacement Systems. This defective hip replacement has been implanted in 93,000 people worldwide. The DePuy hip replacement recall came as a result of a higher than acceptable rate of failure requiring another hip replacement within 5 years.
Thousands of people with the recalled DePuy hip replacement system have already experienced hip replacement complications such as serious or lingering pain, swelling, loosening or even dislocation of the hip implant. Numerous DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems failed prior to this recall, requiring those persons to undergo a second, or revision, surgery. Because of the defective hip replacement, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. cited in its hip recall notice that over 11,500 persons with a DePuy ASR system will suffer a hip replacement failure requiring that implant to be removed and replaced with another hip implant.
According to news reports, unpublished 2010 data from the National Joint Registry (NJR) of England and Wales shows a five-year revision rate of approximately 12% for the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System and approximately 13% for the ASR™ XL Acetabular System. These revision rates are across the entire size range. The risk for revision was highest with ASR head sizes below 50 mm in diameter and among female patients.
