As the population in the United States continues to age, the number of people in need of suitable nursing home facilities grows. Maybe it is your grandmother, your grandfather, your mother or your father. It may even be your wife or your husband. Regardless of who it is, thousands of residents in nursing home facilities across the nation should be aware of one appalling statistic:
Nursing home abuse and neglect is on the rise.
Negligent care and abuse in nursing homes has become widespread and epidemic. Residents are frequently ignored, neglected and – unfortunately – physically abused. Due to the fact that the negligent care or abuse is difficult to detect (typically because it is covered up by the nursing home staff and administration) the careless treatment persists – making residents HELPLESS.
Nursing home abuse or neglect may take many forms (including bedsores, skin ulcers, decubitus ulcers, gangrene, malnutrition, over-medication, dehydration, burns, sexual assault (rapes), falls, infections, threats, and deaths). Most of these abuses to the helpless patient are unreported.
Question: What should be done if I suspect nursing home abuse or neglect?
Answer: You must get HELP! If the abuse or neglect has resulted in a life-threatening condition you should immediately seek medical care through a private physician.
If the health of your loved one is not in jeopardy, but you feel that he or she has been the victim of some form of abuse or neglect, you should contact the following immediately:
- An attorney to investigate the incident and to inform you of your rights
- Your state's department of health
- Your regional ombudsman
Call (713) 355-HELP or 1-800/899-3352 to HELP improve the quality of life and the quality of care in nursing homes.
